Speedy Stop Presents The Intriguing And Romantic Tale Of Coffee

Coffee was first discovered in Africa, 800 A.D. When it crossed the Red Sea into Arabia, this aromatic and stimulating drink went everywhere that Islam went. Only boiled or parched seeds were traded. Nothing sprouted outside of Africa or Arabia until Baba Budan risked certain death to smuggle fertile seeds out. The invading Turks monopolized the coffee trade as it spread to Europe.

Again the coveted seedlings were contained until 1616 when the Dutch brought the first coffee plant into Europe. In 1696 the Dutch started a coffee plantation in Java, which eventually spread to the surrounding islands. Confident that they had a large share of the coffee market and that coffee grew best in Java, the Dutch gifted coffee trees to a few Aristocrats.

In 1720, Gabriel Mathieu de Clieu eluded the renowned Swiss guards to steal a sprig from Louis XIV's Botanical Garden in Paris. Then, he faced thirst and sickness at sea to give his ration of water to his seedling and bring it safely to Matinique. One seedling yielded millions of trees.

In 1727, Lt. Col. Francisco de melo Palheta of Brazil was sent to mediate a border dispute in the French Guiana between the French and Dutch. Francisco's underlying mission was to bring back a coveted seedling to Brazil. When he failed, Francisco chose to romance the governor's wife instead. She is turn gifted him with a bouquet of seedlings. From the bouquet, Brazil was brought into the coffee market.
